What are IFOs... and why do UFO Investigators Care?

We're famous for hunting UFOs, so many people don't realize that an important part of MUFON's work involves categorizing IFOs (Identified Flying Objects). IFOs can be anything from bright planets to meteors to birds or man-made objects -- in short, anything that could be honestly mistaken for a UFO, but that can be positively identified using proper scientific investigative techniques.

IFO reports are important because the more objects that we are able to identify, the more accurate our UFO files become as we are able to weed out supposed anomalies that truly do have a normal explanation. Statistically, over 90% of all sightings reported to MUFON prove to be IFOs. This is not a discouraging fact, but only serves to make the true unknown objects that much more intriguing.
